MMORPG
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game
MMORPG is short for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. It means massively multiplayer online role-playing game. But since it is so immensely long when written out, I will stick to the well-known short spelling MMORPG here.
The first stone in the MMORPG scene is Neverwinter Nights, which was released in 1991. It offered the advantages of a solo game for the first time and still had the possibility of interaction with other players.
Then in 1997, the famous Ultima Online came out. Ultima Online was a very good fusion of the Ultima series with the elements of multiplayer.
Everquest ushered in the age of modern MMORPGs in 1999. It used the pillars of MMORPGs – appealing 3D graphics, persistent world, social player interaction – to good effect in line with the technology.
Then, in early 2005, the most successful MMORPG to date was launched. Within a month, World of Warcraft already had 200,000 customers. By July 2005, the number of customers had risen to 3,500,000, and in December 2005, the 5,000,000 mark was broken.
Community
I notice more and more often that the communities of MMORPGs are getting worse and worse. For example, in a chat about another MMORPG is pulled. I wonder why people can’t accept that there are other games and therefore other opinions. The more popular a game is, the more often it is talked about. Currently, World of Warcraft has to be used as a scapegoat.
I have experienced the best communities until Ultima Online on the freeshard Shadowworld and Everquest2. But I have to say that the community in Everquest2 has become worse and worse over time. But maybe it’s because people change and they’d rather badmouth everything than deal with the topic a little more intensively.
Hobby
I used to only ever play PC games offline, but now I almost only play online games thanks to flat rates. Among the online games, MMORPGs account for the largest share of playing time. Over the years, some games have accumulated here. Chronologically sorted by playing time you can find my list of MMORPGs in the menu again.
